#CaptainsOfCareem: Businessman Gone Captain

“I now have three cars of my own that I make money from using Careem.” The man sitting beside us is sharing the most ingenious business advice we’ve heard lately. His ideas are as unconventional as the location of our conversation. We’re not in a cafe or a restaurant. We’re in a Careem and he’s our driver.

We give you Hany Shehata, the first captain in our series of #CaptainsOfCareem, aiming to break the stigma that is spreading in our society about being a driver, and revolutionizing the concept of being one. “Being a driver is not something anyone should ever, ever be ashamed of. The most important thing is to have ambitions, and achieve them,” says Shehata, a charismatic Egyptian man with a big smile painted on his face. We’re cruising down Maadi as we start a casual conversation with him when he tells us how he ended up with Careem.

“I used to work as a businessman at a company before the revolution happened, but after that, I couldn’t anymore. It wasn’t enough for me to survive. I took my car and become a Careem driver, and soon enough, I used my business skills and now own three cars that are actually in Careem as well.” Then a moment of realization hits us: We’re not in Shehata’s car. We’re in his actual office. He’s not just a Careem driver. He’s a Careempreneur, using the groundbreaking app to promote his business.
