Cairo’s Coffee Crusaders: Egypt Took on the World Barista Championship

We know that a lot of us have this uncanny thirst for competition, and that is why you will probably find competition for just about everything under the sun. So, it is no surprise that there is an entire competition dedicated to picking out the top barista in the entire world, known as the World Barista Championship.

If we shift our gaze to Egypt, it has already jumped on the coffee competition bandwagon. Back in 2022, the country had its first-ever National Barista Championship, where 14 participants from all across Egypt competed to find out who was the best barista.

Baristas Compete in a Series of Brewing Tasks

In this competition, for 15 minutes, every contestant is tasked with making four espressos, four milk drinks, and four original signature drinks. All these drinks end up getting tested and judged by an expert panel.

The winner of that competition then gets to travel to compete in the World Barista Championship. With that, we can now introduce to you this year’s winner, Mostafa Mamdouh, who joined the 2024 World Barista Championship.

His World Barista Championship Journey

Mamdouh competed in the 2024 World Barista Championship, which took place in South Korea. For the first round, he focused on African coffee and seemed to make a major impression on the judges.

He didn’t win the final round, but overall, he had a unique journey representing Egypt in the competition. Tell us, do you know any other competitions that are so out of the box?
