If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a centuries-old mud-brick castle gets paired with a bold, futuristic red rooftop—well, here’s your answer. The Ernan Boutique Hotel in Mehriz, Iran, doesn’t just give the past a makeover. It lets the past and present stand side-by-side like two confident characters in the same story.

A Restored Castle and a Bold New Roof
At the heart of the project are two main players: the original castle, restored with just enough care to keep its scars, and a brand-new red roof — an independent, hat-like structure that floats above it. These two don’t blend; they interact. Where the castle crumbles, the roof swoops in. Where the walls remain strong, the roof steps back. It’s a playful dance between old and new, creating pockets of light, shadow, and unexpected geometry.

A Stay Designed as a Journey
Forget the idea of checking into a room and staying put. There, guests follow a rotational itinerary, moving through four themed worlds—Earth, Fire, Water, and Air—over two days, each lasting half a day. Meditation sessions and hands-on workshops add depth to each theme, turning your stay into a guided elemental retreat rather than a simple overnight visit.

A Sensory Playground to Explore
The designers made the entire hotel a sensory playground, encouraging guests to touch the textured mud-brick walls, watch sunlight filter through the perforated red lattice above, wander up and down stepped levels, and feel the atmosphere shift as the architecture changes. The whole experience ends with a panoramic view of the epic mountainscape, tying the human-made to the majestic natural world.

A Destination You Move Through
Ernan Boutique Hotel isn’t a passive place. It’s an unfolding story. A contrast of mud-brick history and bold red modernity. A guided journey through elemental atmospheres, meditation, and workshops. A structure you explore as much as you sleep in.
