After 13 years away from the big screen, Ahmed Mekky is officially making his return to cinema. His last film was Samir Abu El Nil, and now he’s signed on for a brand-new movie, Mosem El-Teen, marking the end of one of the longest breaks in his film career.

While we’ve missed seeing him regularly on screen, this comeback is the perfect excuse to revisit some of the unforgettable characters that turned him into one of Egypt’s most versatile comedy stars.

Tamer We Shawqiya

Before he was carrying entire films on his shoulders, Mekky was already stealing scenes as Haitham in Tamer We Shawqiya. Playing Tamer’s stylish, rich, and effortlessly cool best friend, he became one of the sitcom’s biggest highlights.

The character was so popular that audiences wanted more of him, proving early on that Mekky had the charisma to turn supporting roles into fan favorites.

Morgan Ahmed Morgan

Mekky’s next big moment came with Haitham Daboor in Morgan Ahmed Morgan. Starring alongside Adel Emam, he played the spoiled, arrogant rich university student who somehow managed to be both incredibly annoying and absolutely hilarious.

The role exploded in popularity and ended up changing the course of his career. Daboor became such a fan favorite that the character eventually earned his own movie, officially launching Mekky as a leading man.

H Daboor

Taking the beloved character even further, H Daboor put Mekky front and center.

The film follows Daboor after his wealthy father is wrongly imprisoned, forcing him out of his comfortable lifestyle and into the streets of Egypt. Watching the pampered rich kid suddenly navigate a completely different world made for some of Mekky’s funniest moments, while also showing he could carry an entire blockbuster on his own.

Teer Enta

If there was ever proof that Ahmed Mekky can become literally anyone, it’s Teer Enta.

The story follows Dr. Baheeg, an awkward, painfully shy veterinarian who gets help from a genie to win over the woman he loves. But that’s only the beginning. Throughout the film, Mekky constantly reinvents himself, switching personalities with incredible ease.

One minute he’s Souma Al-Asheq, an overly emotional poet who feels everything a little too deeply. The next, he’s hilariously impersonating Egypt national team coach Hassan Shehata. Then suddenly he’s playing a wealthy Gulf businessman who throws money around while delivering witty one-liners. Those are just a few examples from a long list of personalities that made the film such a showcase for his range.

La Taragoa Wala Esteslam (El Kabda El Dameyya)

Mekky doubled the fun once again in La Taragoa Wala Esteslam.

As police attempt to bring down a dangerous drug lord, they recruit Hazl’oum, an ordinary man who happens to look exactly like the criminal’s ruthless right-hand man, Adham. What starts as an undercover mission quickly spirals into complete chaos as Hazl’oum struggles to survive while pretending to be someone far more dangerous than he actually is.

The film gave Mekky another chance to bounce between two completely different personalities, proving once again that playing dual roles had become one of his trademarks.

Al Kabeer

Then came the role that would define an entire generation of Egyptian comedy.

Al Kabeer follows the mayor of the fictional Upper Egyptian village of Al-Mazareeta, where a shocking family secret changes everything. On his deathbed, the former mayor reveals that his son, Al Kabeer, has an American-raised twin brother named Johnny, who is entitled to half the inheritance—and the mayorship.

Watching Mekky switch between the traditional, serious Sa’idi Al Kabeer and the overly confident, Westernized Johnny became one of the show’s greatest strengths.

And just when you thought two personalities weren’t enough, along came Hazl’oum—the outrageously eccentric third brother. With his loud mismatched suits, bizarre hairstyles, endless confidence, and complete lack of awareness, Hazl’oum became one of Egyptian comedy’s most iconic characters.

The fact that all three brothers were played by the same actor still feels impressive no matter how many times you watch it.

Khalsana B Sheyaka

Leave it to Ahmed Mekky to star in a series where the entire world ends because of a married couple arguing.

In Khalsana B Sheyaka, a conflict between men and women snowballs into a global war that wipes out civilization, leaving only a handful of survivors in Egypt. The remaining men and women split into rival camps, with Mekky leading the men’s side as Sultan.

Sultan appears fearless, tough, and ready for battle, but beneath all that exaggerated bravado is a genuinely kind-hearted person. As an elderly couple attempts to broker peace by sharing stories about the misunderstandings between men and women throughout history, the film blends absurd comedy with social satire in true Mekky fashion.

One Thing About Ahmed Mekky…

Whether he’s playing three brothers, switching between half a dozen personalities in one movie, going undercover as his own lookalike, or turning a supporting role into an entire franchise, Ahmed Mekky has always had a rare ability to completely disappear into his characters.

With his long-awaited return to cinema finally happening, we’re hoping his next role gives us another unforgettable character to add to this list. Because if history has taught us anything, it’s that one Ahmed Mekky is never enough.

Malak cannot seem to get enough of Literature - so much so that she has pursued it in both her BA and MA, and the love affair is still going strong. Aside from her love for words, humans generally fascinate her. She spends a lot of her time analyzing the minds of people around her and watching criminal minds. She is still fairly new in adulthood, and until now, nothing has made sense in life but chocolate.
