The curtain has officially closed on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Spain lifting the trophy after an unforgettable tournament. But if you’re already counting down to the next one, you’re not alone.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is shaping up to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. From six host nations across three continents to celebrations marking 100 years of the tournament, here’s everything we know so far.

When & Where Will the 2030 World Cup Take Place?

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be primarily hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, making it only the second tournament ever to be held across multiple continents.

The competition is expected to take place between early June and late July 2030, although FIFA has yet to confirm the official match schedule.

A World Cup Celebrating 100 Years of History

This won’t just be another World Cup. The 2030 edition marks 100 years since the very first FIFA World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930.

To celebrate the milestone, FIFA will stage three special centenary matches in South America before the tournament officially moves to its main hosts in Europe and Africa.

  • Uruguay will host the opening centenary celebration as the birthplace of the FIFA World Cup.
  • Argentina will stage a commemorative match in recognition of reaching the inaugural 1930 World Cup final.
  • Paraguay will host a celebration game in Asunción, honoring CONMEBOL, the only continental football confederation that existed when the tournament was first created.

It’s a unique way of paying tribute to the competition’s roots while kicking off a tournament spread across the globe.

Which Countries Have Already Qualified?

Six nations have already secured their spots through automatic qualification as hosts:

  • Morocco
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Uruguay
  • Argentina
  • Paraguay

The remaining 42 places will be decided through continental qualifying campaigns over the next few years.

Will the Tournament Get Even Bigger?

For now, the 2030 World Cup is expected to feature 48 teams, the same expanded format introduced at the 2026 tournament.

However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that FIFA will examine a proposal to increase the tournament to 64 teams for the centenary edition. No final decision has been made, but if approved, it would make 2030 the biggest World Cup in history.

And After That? Here’s What’s Next

The World Cup won’t be slowing down after 2030.

The 2034 FIFA World Cup will head to Saudi Arabia, making it a very different tournament from its predecessor. While the 2030 edition will span six countries across three continents, the 2034 tournament will be hosted by a single nation.

The Countdown Starts Now

Four years may sound like a long wait, but the road to 2030 is already underway. Between six host nations, celebrations honoring a century of World Cup history, and the possibility of another tournament expansion, the next edition is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable in football history. Until kickoff, fans can look forward to years of qualifiers, host city announcements, and plenty of excitement as the countdown to football’s biggest birthday begins.
