The Royal Parade: For the First Time in History, Mummies Will Be Led Through the Streets of Cairo to Their New Home
Although there have been several topics trending in Egypt recently, there’s a particular one that really stood out. As soon as anyone passed next to Tahrir Square, it was hard not to notice the grand preparations that are taking place in the area. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is preparing for a major historical event to transfer the royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in Cairo to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat.
In a royal parade, 22 mummies (18 kings and 4 queens) and 17 royal coffins, dating back to the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Dynasties, will bid farewell to Tahrir on 22 cars that are similar to the ancient Egyptian war wheels, while tuning loud musical compositions. The royal procession will be held in the presence of a large number of ambassadors, and local and international media.
The mummies that will be transported include the mummies of Queen Hatshepsut, King Ramses II, King Tuthmosis III, King Seqenenre Tao, King Seti I, Queen Meritamen, the wife of King Amenhotep I, and Queen Ahmose Nefertari, the wife of King Ahmose I.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is set to become one of the largest museums of civilization in Egypt and the Middle East. The museum is a window into the huge diversity of Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the present day.
