In Pictures: Scenes of Everyday Life Returning to Baghdad
The Guardian’s photographer Sean Smith recently captured a number of intimate pictures showing how different Baghdad, Iraq has become from the heyday of NATO’s occupation in the 2000s. When I left 12 years ago, Baghdad was grey and bloody and devastation was all that the country knew. People had no hope and were fleeing for their lives. However, the situation has changed significantly in recent years especially following the defeat of the tyrannical and self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). There’re some definite encouraging signs that life is returning to normal to the ancient city.
