UN: Millennials’ Music Habit Puts Their Hearing at Risk

Our music-loving generation is seriously damaging their ears, because they’re not being responsible with the high noise levels on their audio players. In 2010, it was estimated that around 360 million people are experiencing moderate hearing loss, and currently, the number has doubled to 466 million people from around the world.

Unfortunately, the number is on the rise, and it’s expected to reach 900 million by the year 2050 according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Young people are at risk for doing what they love the most, which is continuously listening to the music they like over and over again via their headphones without being responsible. They are not aware of the concept ‘how loud is too loud!’

WHO is urging manufacturers and regulators of smartphone and other audio player companies to ensure that they offer a certain software that notifies their consumers when they’re listening to their music a little too loud for too long. There are certain features such as automatic volume reduction and parental control of the volume so that when they exceed the volume limit the device would automatically lower it.

According to WHO, the European Union is the only international community to mandate output levels on the personal audio devices to be set to a standard of 85 minimum and of 100 maximum.

Also, WHO is looking at the volume levels in places like nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and concerts, as well as sporting arenas where they often have high levels of sounds exposure. The organization has actually implemented guidelines but unfortunately all of these places do not follow them.

WE SAID THIS: Be responsible, always!
