Why Online Dating and Egyptians Are Incompatible

Let’s face it: us girls are always skeptical when it comes to any kind of real dating here in our society, let alone online dating. There are tons of reasons behind that.

Being a girl in our Egyptian society is actually one of the hardest things anyone can ever do. Well, I never really knew dating apps were that popular in Egypt, to be honest, until I decided to create a fake account on a dating app (with a fake identity) and see how things go. I was even reluctant to post any pictures given the huge amount of pervs out there.

Why online dating and Egyptians are incompatible, you ask?

Most people are just looking for hook ups

If you think Egyptian dudes who signed up for this are looking for a long term serious relationship you might be wrong. 80% of them are just looking for a hook up based on physical appearance. Though there were some pretty decent guys out there, the majority of them were not very decent -once again, I am not generalizing.

It’s okay for a male to have an account on dating apps and sites, but as a girl, that means “enti gaya tosh2oti” to most Egyptians

If there’s something we all agree on, it’s that we live in a sexist society that exhibits misogyny towards women. Since women are oppressed and there’s a belief that men are superior to women, what’s wrong for a girl is totally OK for a guy.

Most probably they will call you “shemal” eventually

Since every girl is called “shemal” – whether she’s good or bad – that won’t make you any different. Even if you date for a while and partner up in a relationship, then break up, he’ll probably tell people that you were “shemal” for going on tinder in the first place.

Girls think that may earn them a bad reputation

As a girl in Egypt, anything you say or do will be held against you, somehow. The reason girls here are cynical is because people will always find a way to ruin a girl’s reputation and talk bad behind her back. “What if someone I know sees me on tinder? How will that make me look?” you’ll probably be called a bitch, anyway, so it doesn’t really matter…

Most people just want to sext

The amount of sexting is unbelievable. Yes, you’re sexually oppressed and everything, however, that definitely doesn’t give you the right to go all creepy and weird on girls. If you think we’ll fall for that and like you, stop. Please. It’s gross and disgusting and will definitely not make us like you.

The amount of cat fishing is insane

I talked to someone who had Nick Bateman as his profile picture and when I asked him was that really him? (Although I was positive it wasn’t), he swore it was. He even said “I can get you more pictures if you want.” Well, of course you can get me more pictures, it’s Nick Bateman for crying out loud, his pictures are all over the freaking internet.

Online dating is something that would never enter the psychology of your typical Arab.
About 50% of marriages here in Egypt are arranged marriages. Thus, dating is unheard of most of the time. Some girls aren’t even allowed to talk to their so called boyfriends on the phone before getting engaged, let alone online dating. Egyptian parents would probably burry their daughters alive, if they knew she met her prince charming online.
