The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently announced that it will continue operating inside Gaza City, even after Israeli military orders urged civilians to relocate to what are being called “humanitarian zones” in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. The agency says the plan to move is not feasible: the zones lack adequate resources and space, and many essential health facilities are concentrated in Gaza City.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the evacuation order as “appalling,” emphasizing that the area where people are supposed to move simply can’t support both the current population and new arrivals.
He stressed that half of the Gaza Strip’s remaining functioning hospitals are located in the city, and that losing them would deal a catastrophic blow to the already fragile health system. With over a million Palestinians still in or around Gaza City, WHO is urging the international community to step up its response to prevent a worsening humanitarian disaster.
