When Tech Goes Bad: Is Houseparty Really Hacking Our Accounts?
With the quarantine came the rise of video calling. Recently, people all over the world began downloading video calling apps to connect with friends, family, and loved ones. These apps that were used to connect people from different countries, now connect them while they’re in the same city but unable to meet in person. One of the most commonly downloaded apps was Houseparty.
Houseparty is a video calling app that allows you to call friends via video, and even play games with them.
However, there have recently been rumors spreading that the app hacks your social media and bank accounts, with users stating that they’ve been hacked and advising others to quickly delete their accounts, as well as the app itself.
On the 31st of March, Houseparty responded in a tweet, saying these statements from users were unverified claims, offering “a $1,000,000 bounty for the first individual to provide proof of such a campaign to bounty@houseparty.com”.
Have you experienced anything fishy while using the app?
