Syria’s Story Makes it to The 2020 Oscars With Two Documentaries Shortlisted for Nominations
According to Arab News “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists of semi-finalists in nine categories, and a Syrian documentary “For Sama” has been shortlisted for the Best Documentary Feature Award.” “The Cave” is yet another Syrian film that was given a nod in the Documentary Feature category, as well as six other films from our region that have been nominated in three different Academy Awards categories.
In “The Cave”, Oscar-nominated director, Feras Fayyad tells the story of Dr. Amani Ballour, who happens to be a pediatrician that stayed in Eastern Ghouta in order to aid people located at a temporary underground hospital. It’s definitely a must-see.
Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts’s devastating documentary, “For Sama”, was actually shot in a five-year span in Aleppo, and is basically about a woman’s view of the world’s most brutal war. The film highlights and brings Syria’s heartbreaking conflict and the suffering of its people directly to the screen.
At the beginning of December, “For Sama” actually managed to win four awards during the British Independent Film Awards, which included Best British Independent Film. The documentary also won Best Director, Best Documentary, and Best Editing awards. You can see how it created a huge buzz.
