Matariya’s Grand Iftar: How Tens of Thousands Came Together for Egypt’s Largest Communal Meal

What started as a small neighborhood iftar in 2013 has transformed into one of Egypt’s most awe-inspiring Ramadan traditions. Every year on the 15th of Ramadan, people gather in Cairo’s Matariya district to break their fast together, with 2025 seeing tens of thousands of attendees.

The Matariya iftar began when a few neighbors from the Hamada estate decided to set up tables in the street to share a meal. Over time, word spread, and more people joined, turning the small gathering into an annual event.

Today, it stretches across nine streets and attracts tens of thousands, including high-profile figures. In 2025, among the attendees were Dr. Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity; Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports; and Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, according to Ahram Online, and Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS).

Beyond the food, the Matariya iftar is also a cultural and artistic event. Graphic artist Ahmed Zebadi has led a street art initiative, transforming walls into a visual tribute to Ramadan’s heritage. The murals include depictions of beloved Egyptian characters like Fouad Al Mohandiss.

A Celebration of Solidarity in Difficult Times

Despite economic hardships, Matariya’s mass iftar continues to thrive, proving the resilience and spirit of unity of its people.

In 2024, Palestinian flags were incorporated into the street decorations as an act of solidarity, showing that the event is also about standing together through all circumstances. This year, as well, attendees gathered to show solidarity for Palestine.

This annual gathering showcases how a simple meal can grow into a cultural phenomenon that unites people in the spirit of generosity, remembrance, and celebration.
