Gamal Mubarak Announces Plans To Run For Presidency
In a surprising move, Gamal Mubarak has announced that he will run for Egypt’s presidency in the 2018 elections.
According to the son of ousted Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak, there is nothing in the country’s constitution that bars him from candidacy.
Current president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who enjoys widespread support, has yet to comment on Mubarak’s announcement. It remains to be seen whether the former Army general will bow out gracefully and back Mubarak’s bid or challenge him in a re-election.
Prior to the Jan. 25 revolution, Mubarak was Deputy Secretary General of the now-defunct, ruling National Democratic Party.
In April of 2011, he was arrested on charges of corruption, abuse of power and his alleged role in the deaths of revolutionary protestors. On Jan. 26 of this year, he was released from prison, fueling speculation of his return to politics.
WE SAID THIS: Happy April Fool’s Day 😉
