From FGM To Violence & Harassment: Egyptian Series “Waraq Tout” Tackles Various Gender Issues

Waraq Tout 2023, the Egyptian TV Show now streaming on “Watch It” has grabbed the attention of audiences and critics alike for being one of the recent shows that departures from depicting the problems of the upper social class and communicating social issues that are relevant to millions of Egyptian and Arabs women coming from all social strata.

The 45-episode series is about a group of people who come from diverse cultural and societal backgrounds starring Sheriff Salama, Asmaa Galal, and Khaled Answar. Written by Abada Naguib, and directed by Hossam Ali. It tackles various sorts of violence against women, including female genital mutilation, sexual harassment, bullying, child marriage and psychological violence.

The one-setting series taking place in the “Academy of Theatrical Arts in Cairo” along a duration of nearly nine months features characters coming from several backgrounds. There is “Samia” who lives in a disadvantaged neighborhood suffering from the control of her patriarchal brother. Then, there is “Yasmine” who comes from a wealthy family but also clashes with her controlling father and plans to rebel.

It is noteworthy that the cinematic scene in Egypt has been seeing a rise in productions that comment on social issues, especially about women. In only the past three years, the theme has been recurring in many other shows like “Newton’s Game”, “Under Guardianship”, and “Faten Amal Harby” to name a few.
