“Al-Salamu Alaikom, my name is David Govrin; my Arab friends call me Dawood,” the new Israeli ambassador in Egypt says in a video posted yesterday on the embassy’s official Facebook page. He was born and raised in Jerusalem, Palestine. He then introduced his family; he has two boys and a girl.

Govrin then talked about his political career, then he moved to expressing his great admiration for late Anwar al-Sadat. He studied Middle East Studies and Islamic Civilization. During his college years, he visited Egypt for the first time and fell in love with the Egyptian vibes, great hospitality and humor, saying that “Adel Emam is the best comedian in the world.”

In the second half of the video he talks about how happy he is to return to Egypt, “as the Egyptian proverb goes, one who drinks from the Nile returns to it,” he said. Govrin boasted about the areas Israelis are ‘experts’ at, like agriculture and drinking water desalination, which they would be very happy to share with us – ending his offer with another proverb, “your near neighbor is better than your far brother.”

Govrin just landed in Cairo this Sunday to start working at the embassy right away. He worked in the Israeli embassy in Egypt a while back and just left his work in the embassy in Jordan to replace former ambassador Haim Koren, who requested to leave the office for “personal reasons.”
