Egyptian Judoka Refuses to Shake Israeli’s Hand Following Defeat, and Egyptians React
Earlier this week, lots of people got very hyperactive on social media over the announced match in Rio between Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby and his Israeli opponent, Or Sasson. Well, the day has come and El Shehaby was loudly booed at the Rio 2016 Olympics after his first-round loss to Sasson, when El Shehaby refused to shake his opponent’s hand, which is a major breach of judo etiquette. The referee then called El Shehaby back to the mat and asked to him bow; El Shehaby gave a quick nod of his head.
Egyptians of course did not stay put; horrendous tweets attacking El Shehaby were tweeted, others took to his side, memes were created and much, much more.
