Egypt has earned a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, after receiving 173 votes in elections held at the UN General Assembly in New York. The win marks a new milestone in Egypt’s diplomatic journey. For Egypt, it’s not just a return to the council but also a reflection of the growing recognition of its evolving role in international affairs.

Representing Africa on the Global Stage
Running as part of the African Group alongside Mauritius and South Africa, Egypt secured enough votes to join the 47-member council, which renews about one-third of its seats each year through a rotation system.
A Third Term on the Council
This will be Egypt’s third time serving on the council—two of those terms under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi. The win highlights Egypt’s growing diplomatic presence and its active engagement in international human rights discussions.

National Strategy Drives Human Rights Work
At home, Egypt has been working under its National Human Rights Strategy (2021–2026)—a framework designed to strengthen rights and freedoms, promote equality, and encourage a stronger human rights culture across institutions.

A Coordinated Diplomatic Effort
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs led a months-long campaign to support Egypt’s candidacy, showcasing its progress on human rights and ongoing political, economic, and social development.
With its new term starting January 1, 2026, Egypt plans to build on current progress by developing a new national human rights strategy once the existing plan concludes.
Next Steps in Reform
Efforts will be focused on modernizing the justice system and developing rehabilitation and correctional centers.
Egypt will also expand social protection programs and roll out initiatives to empower women, youth, and people with disabilities, aiming to create broader opportunities and fairer access to services.

Role in Regional Stability and Peace
Egypt continues to play a visible regional role, hosting peace and dialogue initiatives such as the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit held on October 13th—part of its wider efforts to promote stability and cooperation across the region.
Looking Ahead
Winning a seat on the UN Human Rights Council gives Egypt another chance to strengthen its human rights record and deepen collaboration with global partners. The coming years will test how the country turns its stated commitments into steady, on-the-ground progress.
