Egyptian authorities have thwarted a major antiquities smuggling attempt at Nuweiba Port in South Sinai, seizing a shipment of 2,189 ancient Egyptian artifacts valued at EGP 3.578 billion.
The smuggled items—hidden inside a truck—spanned several eras of Egyptian history, including Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. The truck was seized during a joint inspection operation by customs officials and the Antiquities Unit, revealing artifacts of varying sizes and significance.

Authorities have registered the incident under case number 8/2025, with the suspect and confiscated pieces referred to the Public Prosecution. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has taken custody of the recovered items for safekeeping and further examination.
