Deputy Governor of Alexandria Arrested on Charges of Bribery
The Deputy Governor of Alexandria – Soad Al Kholy – has been arrested this morning under five different charges of bribery.
According to Al-Ahram and Egypt Independent, Kholy received bribes from five different businessmen. The bribes amount to approximately 1 million EGP; the bribes were not paid in cash, they were paid in golden artifacts. Kholy was arrested, alongside her five accomplices.
The ACA has affirmed that Kholy was receiving those bribes, in exchange for having Kholy override decisions pertaining to the demolition of certain buildings/facilities owned by the businessmen, and constructed on illegally acquired territory.
Had this corruption scheme been successful, the five businessmen would have been exempt from paying fines amounting up to a total of 10 million EGP. The arrest warrant was issued by Egypt’s General Prosecutor – Nabil Sadek – after his office confirmed the validity of the charges (and the related evidence) presented by the ACA, against Kholy and her accomplices.
