Day One of ICJ’s South Africa vs Israel Genocide Case

Today, January 11th, 2024, in the Hague, Netherlands, The UN’s International Court of Justice is hearing a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The aim is to call on the court to order Israel to stop military operations in the Gaza Strip, but the ICJ will deliver ‘only an opinion on the genocide allegation’ since SA vs Israel is not presented as a criminal trial.

Tensions were rising outside Peace Palace as Dutch security forces had a rather tough time separating between Pro Palestine and Israeli supporters.

In the 84-page submission, South Africa has described Israel’s actions in the Gaza strip as “intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group.”
