The Council of the Arab League at the ministerial level has unanimously approved the nomination of Egypt’s former foreign minister, Nabil Fahmy, as Secretary General. During a virtual meeting, Arab foreign ministers endorsed Egypt’s request to nominate Fahmy as successor to Ahmed Aboul Gheit, signaling strong regional backing for his candidacy.
Arab Summit Approval
The council agreed to forward its recommendation to the 35th Ordinary Session of the Arab League Summit, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia. At the summit, the council is expected to formally approve the appointment by consensus, a step that typically finalizes the selection process. The proposed term for the position is five years, beginning on 1 July 2026, with the possibility of renewal.

Fahmy’s Track Record in International Relations
His diplomatic career includes key postings as Egypt’s ambassador to Japan (1997–1999) and to the United States (1999–2008). He also played senior roles in international negotiations on security and arms control, establishing himself as a leading voice in global disarmament efforts.
He served as Egypt’s foreign minister from July 2013 to June 2014, a politically sensitive period during which he worked to diversify Egypt’s international partnerships amid strained relations with the United States and Europe.

Leadership in the United Nations
Beyond bilateral diplomacy, Fahmy held prominent positions within the United Nations system. He chaired the United Nations (UN) Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters and was vice-chair of the UN General Assembly’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security. These roles further cemented his reputation as an expert in international security and multilateral diplomacy.

Commentary on Regional Affairs
In addition to his diplomatic work, Fahmy is an accomplished author. His book, Egypt’s Diplomacy in War, Peace, and Transition (2020), along with its Arabic counterpart From the Heart of Events (2022), offers an insider’s perspective on key moments in Egyptian foreign policy and regional politics. Drawing on firsthand experience at the negotiating table, his writing provides valuable insight into the complexities of diplomacy in times of conflict and transition.

Nabil Fahmy, Egypt’s former foreign minister with decades of experience in diplomacy and international security, has been unanimously recommended for Secretary-General of the Arab League. He is set to begin a five-year term, bringing expertise and a steady hand to guide the League through regional and global challenges.
