The Iran–Israel Ceasefire: A Recap of the Events So Far
Late Monday night, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “complete and total ceasefire” between Iran and Israel — two countries locked in a twelve-day war that had sent the region into chaos.
According to Trump’s timeline, Iran would halt fire at 5 am GMT on Tuesday. Israel would follow 12 hours later, at 5 pm. Once both sides paused, the ceasefire would officially take effect.
U.S. Strikes Iran & Iran Hits U.S. Base in Qatar Before Any Calls for Truce
The ceasefire came after a sharp spike in tensions.
On Sunday, the U.S. launched missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. In response, Iran fired rockets at sites near Doha, Qatar on Monday — targeting a U.S. base.
With the conflict threatening to spiral, Trump stepped in, brokered a truce, and announced it just hours later.
Trump Brokers a Ceasefire & Both Sides Accept
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the ceasefire, stating Israel had “achieved all objectives” — including neutralizing threats from Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
Iran’s top security body also accepted the truce. But its Supreme National Security Council emphasized distrust toward Israel, warning that its “hands [remain] on the trigger.”
Israel Heavily Bombed Iran After Signing Ceasefire
Despite agreeing to the deal, Israel launched heavy airstrikes on Iran during the window after Iran had begun its ceasefire but before Israel’s own pause was set to start.
“They dropped a load of bombs,” Trump said. “The biggest load we’ve seen.”
Israel Accuses Iran of Breaking the Ceasefire
Just hours after the truce began, Iran allegedly fired a missile that struck a building in Beersheba, Israel, killing four people. Israel claimed to intercept two other ballistic missiles and accused Iran of breaking the agreement.
Iran’s military denied launching any attacks that morning, suggesting the claims were untrue.
Israel Retaliates, But Trump Intervenes
Israel launched a large-scale bombing campaign in retaliation for the presumed Iranian breach of the ceasefire, but it was stopped midway by Trump.
On his own private online platform, Truth Social, he issued a blunt instruction, writing: “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
Israel said they cannot cancel the operation completely, but they scaled it back, ultimately limiting it to a single strike on an Iranian radar site.
Trump Blames Both Sides for Breaking Ceasefire
Donald Trump expressed open frustration after the ceasefire he brokered quickly began to fall apart. Speaking to reporters, he accused both Iran and Israel of violating the agreement.
“We basically have two countries that have been fighting for so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing” he said.
A Ceasefire on Uncertain Ground
As of now, the ceasefire technically remains in place, but its foundation is shaky. Both Iran and Israel have traded accusations and fire, and the events that unfolded in the hours following the agreement have left the world unsure of what comes next.
