What Really Happened – Egypt August 16th
BREAKING: Egypt withdraws ambassador to Turkey; Rising death toll
1) Egypt has withdrawn its ambassador to Turkey in response to increasing interference of Turkey into Egyptian internal affairs. Earlier in the day, Egypt had cancelled its joint military exercises with Turkey.
2) The death toll of today’s events has risen with the Ministry of Health officially reporting 27 deaths, but other sources reporting 50 deaths in Cairo alone.
In addition to the civilian death toll, security sources have stated that 64 police officers have been killed across Egypt in the last 24 hours.
3) TV footage shows that 5 cars carrying weapons and protesters carrying alQaeeda flags were seen in Ramses Square.
4) Following calls by youth group Tamarod to form neighborhood watch groups to protect private properties and churches, the Ministry of Interior urged citizens to abide by the curfew and says that those that violate it will be dealt with strictly and in accordance with the law.
Despite curfew commencing in Egypt, Ramses Square remains filled with protesters. A large fire has engulfed a building near the square shortly after the curfew commenced.
5) The speech given by the King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia in support of the Egyptian government was praised by the Egyptian Cabinet.
The United Arab Emirates have also stated their complete support of the statement given by King Abdallah.
