Cairo Taxi Drivers Ambush Uber Driver and Take Him to Police Station
With all the protests against Uber and Careem this past week where Egyptian taxi drivers are demanding those services to be banned, they decided to step it up another notch and it was ugly as hell. A video has surfaced of taxi drivers ambushing an Uber driver. Apparently, they decided to request a ride and upon the driver’s arrival, they took him to the police station for an investigation.
It is the most disgusting and hostile thing I have ever seen. I can only imagine how horrified the Uber driver was and if taxi drivers think they are getting attention or sympathy, I believe this will completely backfire in their faces. Social media has been flooded with reactions regarding the taxi drivers protest and most posts I’ve seen share nothing but grudge against them.
Taxi representatives claimed in a press conference that foreign companies are creating strife between Egyptian riders and drivers, calling on Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Sherif Ismail to solve the matter. The initiative “we’re the real taxis, not the outsiders” was launched in the conference.
From sexually harassing passengers, turning off the meter, dirty vehicles and getting into fights with other drivers during your ride, taxi drivers have a lot to learn before they dare act like thugs against those who actually help us with a civilized service.
Here is a comprehensive comparison that is being shared on social media that simply shows how flawed the Egyptian taxi service has become:
