In Pictures: Cairo’s Fustat District Gets a Vibrant New Cultural Center

Ezbet Khairallah is a very densely populated settlement in the Fustat District in Cairo, with clusters of similarly-colored buildings stuck next to each other, so spotting a bright yellow building is quite easy.

From its vibrant color to its noble purpose, Dawar El Ezba Cultural Center is a beautiful project and a positive example that shows how modern architecture can have an evident social impact, using locally resourced materials. The project has also received a Gold-level Cairo Design Award.

Designed by Ahmed Hossam Saafan, the center offers employment and vocational training for women, and provides an interactive platform for community arts and social interaction for children and adults, all the while encouraging diversity. Operated by Dawar for Arts and Development, an independent cultural organization, the center consists of a theatre/workshop area, an art studio, a gathering space, and an office.
