White Helmets, the volunteer Syrian civil defense group have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to Al-Jazeera. Backed by more than 130 organizations from around the world, they’ve been saving tens of thousands of people from the rubble, building collapses and fires caused by the ongoing civil war ever since 2013.

At least 134 members have died on duty, Ammar Aosalmo, a senior member of the group’s branch in Aleppo, told Al Jazeera. He explained that his motivation for risking his life for others is that Syrians saw this group as their last hope.

A campaign to support the White Helmets to win the Nobel Prize is calling for people to sign the petition. The winner will be announced in October 7th.

WE SAID THIS: They deserve it.
