Trends to Expect in 2014

Last time, we made fun of horrible Egyptians style trends in 2013. This week, we move on to 2014 trends. Every year slight shifts happen on the style scene, until three years down the line and you’ll find everybody is dressing differently. 2014 has many trends making a comeback and some completely new ones. New Year means new changes, and before you make your New Year’s resolutions you need to read this.

Hair

Chop it all off – just kidding. I am excited to announce that we all can get rid of our split ends happily in 2014. The need for hair extensions will diminish. Of course in Egypt, I can never guarantee that we’ll lose our obsession over straight, long hair, however we care about being trendy, not obsessed. Short hair means less maintenance and less time.

If you are not brave enough, a medium to short bob is so in for 2014. Your hair should hit no longer than your collar bone. Ditch your flat iron and go for volumized waves and unstructured curls. If you are feeling like you need a huge change, go for the pixie cut. It’s the number one trend for 2014, especially after Jennifer Lawrence boosted its reputation from “alternative” to “mainstream”.

Brows

eyebrows

The thicker the better is just a complete myth. 2014 is all about the natural brows. Think Lily Collins and Cara Delavigne – thick and dark, but not drawn on. If you happen to have lighter brows, please don’t go for the tattoo, try to grow them naturally and use tinted brow gel.

Makeup

nude

Mac is releasing a collection called “Magnetic Nude” – everything you can think about (eyeshadows, blushes, lipsticks, etc.) in skin tones. The natural glow of neutral colors is so in for 2014. Think of sun-kissed cheeks and a sexy. beige pout.

Accents of metallic silver and aqua blue are slowly replacing harsh black for the smokey eyes looks. Matte colors are still the go-to for lips – even glosses are looking a lot less shimmery and a lot more buttery and rich. There’s a rumor that orange lipstick is making a comeback – I will be praying before bed daily that it doesn’t.

Outfits

tribal

The party rules are changing: less hot mess and more chic crisp. Tuxedo-inspired outfits are so in for 2014 – think wide-legged pants and crisp tux jackets. Monochrome colors are in, of course with a pop of color. Prints will be all over the place – wording and psychedelic, digital and tribal prints. Tops, dresses, pants and even jackets – you’ll see all of them covered in prints.

Forget about bandage dresses because fringe dresses and tops are making a huge come back. Cropped tops and jackets are replacing blazers and long tops – try higher waisted bottoms so you can hide your navel.

Nails

matte

In Egypt we are somehow stuck in the French manicure stage, however we need to move on with the rest of the world. 2014 nails were a little bit extreme on the runways. Almond shaped nails are in, so forget about stilettos and squares. The color is not as important as much as the texture is. All matte colors are in, from white to black and everything in between. Metallic nails in deep bronze and darker silver are so in, as well as glitter nail polish of the same colors.

Shoes

boots

The ankle cuff is continuing in 2014. Thicker cuffs were introduced on the runways for spring and summer. Biker booties and thigh high boots are still going to be in for 2014, I feel like biker booties should always be in. Hounds tooth, tweed and snakeskin are making a huge comeback this year. Feathers and fur did make a lot of appearances on the runways with pumps and boots, but I’m not sure if it’s very realistic to wear feathery shoes in real life. Would you?

WE SAID THIS: Don’t miss our coverage of top designers’ Spring/Summer 2014 collections.
