We came across an interesting tidbit of news this morning that we couldn’t resist sharing with you: apparently rising electricity costs in Egypt could push some advertising agencies to turn to solar panels to light billboards.

The combination of rising electricity costs and increases in licensing are reportedly doubling the costs of outdoor advertising in some areas, Enterprise reported Sunday, quoting Al Mal. License fees on the October Bridge, for example, are up 40%, according to Dr. Hazem Dir’a, president of Look agency.

Since the advertisers say they are not likely to increase their fees, the increase in cost will drive down their margins and so, understandably, they’re looking for ways to mitigate the costs. In addition to switching to LEDs, which use only 12% of the energy of conventional lights, some companies are also looking to expand the use of solar panels.

WE SAID THIS: We kind of love this…
