Egypt’s Centrepoint and Max Stores Forced to Shut Down Due to Dollar Crisis?

Why can we never have good things? News broke on social media that Centrepoint employees in Carrefour Alexandria found themselves jobless this morning, without any prior notice.

Centrepoint and Max Fashions, are being forced to end their business due to the dollar crisis, according to AlMasry AlYoum. The stores’ products are apparently imported via dollars, and due to the currency deficiency in the Central bank of Egypt, all the branches of the stores across Egypt are allegedly being forced to shut down.

Not only are the employees horrified of their sudden unemployment state, Egyptians, especially mothers (such as myself) are equally saddened. These stores were one of the few stores that had affordable school supplies, house accessories, makeup, retail products, not to mention everything related to children that would cost you a fortune elsewhere.

Shopping for a Minion school bag? A lunch box with a random cartoon character your kid loves? Scented candles? Bohemian throw pillows? Cotton t-shirts? Sportswear, pajamas or anything else for that matter? They have it all and more. These stores may not have been known for the best quality in the history of retail, however, for the prices they offered Egyptian mothers, it was hands down one of my personal favorites.

UPDATE: Max Fashions store just announced that the Alexandria City Centre branch will reopen tomorrow. We’re currently waiting for an official statement from Centrepoint.

WE SAID THIS: We genuinely hope this is all just a rumor and the stores are just going through renovation.
