Partnering with the US start-up, Next Future Transportation Inc, Careem, the app-based taxi booking service, is planning to have 25% of all their journeys to be driverless across Dubai, UAE, by the year 2030.

The project could meet transportation needs in the region in an environmentally friendly way, said Mudassir Sheikha, Careem’s co-founder and managing director. “We are acutely aware of the ground realities of intracity and intercity transport,” he said. “Next offers a unique and compelling vision for mass transit.”

“We have invented the world’s finest autonomous mass transit solution, and as we look to operationalize, we need a partner that will provide operational depth and scale,” said Emmanuele Spera, founder & CEO of Next. “Careem is a perfect partner from our perspective given their vision, credibility and success in transforming transportation across the MENA region. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring advanced transportation technologies and practices to the region.”

The driverless taxi-pods are expected to be spacious enough for six seated and up to 10 standing passengers. The pods will also be equipped to provide smart services like modular restaurant, living accommodation, entertainment, office and battery swap services.
