9 Phobias Egyptians Can Relate To

A phobia is a strong and persistent fear of situations, objects or people, resulting in an unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Phobias are believed to be genetic, due to hereditary brain chemistry, with a environmental component based on past experiences.

Egyptians can develop any phobia but here are 9 of the most common phobias likely to be developed by Egyptians:

1. Haphephobia: the fear of being touched

1
It’s hot, sweaty, sticky, and crowded on the metro, in the taxi, on the bus, on the streets, in supermarkets and in malls. DO NOT TOUCH ME, PLEASE.

2. Cacophobia: the fear of being ugly

2This one goes out to mothers of daughters: “el bet msh hatetgawez keda, yanhar eswed.

3. Homophobia: the fear of homosexuals

Homophobie en Afrique
We’d rather have rapists, thieves, murderers, terrorists, negative influences, horrible political figures, but God forbid if a homosexual is among us.

4. Enochlophobia: the fear of crowds and crowded places

4
They should officially name this one sahelphobia.

5. Anuptaphobia: the fear of remaining unmarried

5
To mothers and daughters, I know this is your worst nightmare. May God never put this upon you because what else is there to life other than finding the perfect 3arees? …once said a typical Egyptian mama.

6. Syngenesophobia: the fear of relatives

6

This one arises especially in Eid, Christmas or 3zoomat Ramadan. “et5aragti wala lesa” “ba2eti 3roosa msh hatfara7ina b2a” and the never ending harassment.

7. Agyiophobia: the fear of busy streets, crossing a busy street, and being in a busy street

7
Because literally EVERYWHERE is crowded in Egypt. It’s easy to dread those busy streets.

8. Ergophobia: the fear of work

8
Egyptians hate work. They will do anything and try everything to avoid it. The most common excuse to avoid it “3andi 7alet wafa fel 3ela”.

9. Nomophobia: the fear of being outside of mobile phone contact

9
Because we are an overly social society and we run for our lives to our chargers if our phones are about to die, this one was necessary on this list.
